The Shawshank Redemption

The 1994 classic Shaw shank redemption is about how people misjudge others.

The movie stars Tim Robbins as Andy Dufresne. He is in prison for murdering his wife. While he is in jail he befriends a few inmates, and he tells them that he is innocent. The inmates he is with do not believe him at first.

While he is in jail he is messed with by a gang inside the prison. He does his best to defend himself, but he can not keep them off. While he is working one day an officer is talking about some financial things, and since Andy was an accountant on the outside he helps him out. This friendship gets the officer to help him get the gang from hurting him.

After the help from the officer he helps other officers do taxes, and other financial activities. This helps him with get in touch with the warden. They work together, and start making money off of the convicts. This also allows Andy to do for others inside the prison. He starts a library with funds from his local government.

While in jail he meets a person who says that he knows the real murder of Andys wife. Andy chooses to help him get an education while in prison, and the inmate says he will help Andy with his jail time. The inmates struggles at first, but Andy helps him along the way and he is able to get a diploma. The inmates says he will help Andy out from his conviction. The warden finds out and has this inmate killed, because Andy is doing illegal things for the warden on the inside. After Andy finds out about the murder, he plans an escape, and it is very creative.

I will not ruin the ending if you have not seen the movie. But it does a great job of the old saying do not judge a book by its cover. Andy goes to jail for a crime he did not commit, but makes the best of his situation anyways.

The movie on its original release did not do as well as it has since it has made its way to home video. The story telling is great, and all the characters complement each other very well. I would recommend this movie to any person looking for a good film to watch. Even if they are not looking to get into films. It is a great film, and is rated as one of the highest films of all time.

Movie Review: V for Vendetta

Hello again this is Movie Connoisseur

The next movie I would like to review is V for Vendetta

This movie starring Hugo Weaving as V, and Natalie Portman as Evey takes a look at what can happen when a democracy turns into a dictatorship.

The movie revolves around the main character V who is a vigilanty towards the government, and is trying to show the people what is actually happening to them. The movie starts out with him blowing up a clock tower, and is doing other things to bring attention to what is happening with the government. While he is doing all these different things, he runs into Evey who is an employee of the local news station. He is about to be arrested when she decides to help him. This puts her in danger, and is injured in the process of helping him. V takes her to his secret hideout. From there shes decides that he is doing the right thing, but does not want to help him. She leaves, and is taken by people in black masks. She is tortured to find out information about V. While this is going on V gets people to march on the government.

Without spoiling too much events unfold, and show how the dictator came into power. This process killed many people in the process, and led V to become disfigured. While finding out all of this information, V decides to get revenge on the people who hurt him.

This movie is a good example of how fear can make people make the wrong decisions. The cinematography is fantastic, as well as the interaction between characters for this movie. The story jumps around a bit, and has a good twist on how everything unfolds, and fits together. It is a little bit gory, but nothing over the top, and has great story telling elements. I would recommend this movie to everyone who is looking for a new movie to choose.

Movie Review: Room (2015)

Hello this is Movie Connoisseur talking about another recent film called Room.

The movie stars Brie Larson as ma, and Jacob Tremblay as Jack. The movie starts off with Jack and ma living together in a very tight quartered room. They spend their days together doing everything inside this room. As  the story progresses, you come to find out that Ma the main character was taken by a man in high school and was forced to live down there, and Jack is their son that she unwillingly had.

Jack is very young and does not know what his situation is, so his actions are not typical of what a person would imagine a hostage situation would look like. As the story progresses the audience starts to see how difficult it is for Ma having to deal with Jack, and her confinement. The man who captured her is there only part of the time, because he works. While the man is at work Ma devises a plan to try to escape. Jack pretends to be dead, and the man goes to get rid of his body. When Jack has an opportunity he escapes the man, and is able to find the police. From there he is able to rescue his mom.

The rest of the story deals with what the outcome of being held captive, and how the rest of the world treats you. Ma's parents, and grandparents do not know how to treat the whole situation.

This story shows the true side of how long term hostages have to adapt back into the real world. It is a dark film, and has a lot of taboo subjects that are not regularly addressed.

In recent years this situation has happened to people, and it shows the difficulty of adjusting. It also shows an outside perspective on how to deal with the situation.

The excellent part of this movie is that it is an original idea that sheds light on how people handle difficult situations. With it being so original it is hard to know where the movie is going with so many possible outcomes. It is a dark film, but it has a positive message on how people can grow, and deal with situations that are not the greatest.

Movie Review: Memento

I am back with another movie review. It is another classic film written, and directed by Chistopher Nolan. The film stars Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano. It is a great look into non-linear story telling.

Memento is about Leonard (Guy Pearce) who has lost his long term memory and can only use his short term memory for only a few hours, to even a few minutes at a time. He can remember up to what made him lose his memory, and before that, but anything after is completely gone. The way he remembers what is going on is he has a few things tattooed on himself, and cares notes with him.

The main idea of the story is Leonard trying to find out what happened to himself that made him lose his memory. The story is told from the end backwards. The movie shows the final scene, and shows the events leading to what happened backwards.

While he is out trying to figure out who killed him, he runs into a few characters. These characters are met at the end of the story and you understand how the characters meet and develop together backwards.

This movie can be found online and is shown backwards, or from the beginning to the end like a normal movie. This way of showing the film takes all the genius out of the way it was made. The non-linear part of the film is its greatest part especially, because of on the first watch you watch a character make a decision without seeing his reasoning. Then after the scene it shows a little bit before, and why characters made any decision. Putting the film backwards was a new way of story telling in films, and shows that movies do not have to follow a basic model to be a great film.

Movie Review: The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou

The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou is one of my favorite movies of all time, and today I would like to discuss why that is.

The movie is directed, and written by Wes Anderson. It stars Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett, Anjelica Houstan, Willem Dafoe, and Jeff Goldblum. With this all star team it would be hard to make a bad movie. The music for the film was created by Seu Jorge who also had a part in the film. The music was mostley David Bowe covers Played by Seu Jorge, but sang in portuguese.

The film is about Captain Steve Zissou who make nature documentaries, and his life is falling down around him. He originally made stellar documentaries, with his crew, that people absolutely loved, but the films have slowley been getting worse. To make things even more awful in his last film his best friend, and crew mate was killed by an animal. This sets Steve to go out and find the animal and return the favor.

While Steve is getting set to go out and find this animal while filming another documentary, he runs into some odd situations. His marriage starts to fall apart, and his wife is the person funding the films. His long lost son Played by Owen Wilson contacts him, and ends up joining the crew to set out on this adventure. And finally, while they go out to film this a reporter played by Cate Blanchett joins the crew to document the film making process.

This film is very different from your standard every day movie. This is to be expected with Wes Andersons film making. The major thing that can be seen within the first few minutes of the film is that the way the characters interact with each other is very different. No character within the film falls flat personality wise. Every person has their own character traits, strengths, and flaws.

The next thing that is very apparent is the visuals within the film. One scene specifically comes to mind when Steve walks through the boat. The boat is visually shown cut in half. If you can imagine a two dimensional video game where a character can go left, right, up, and down, this is how the boat is shown.

The story is an action, adventure, comedy, and drama just to name a few genres it falls under. The movie feels very artistic, and if you are looking to branch out of the ordinary movie, I would recommend this.

6 Movie Trilogies For Begginers

Today I am going to look into some of the best movie trilogies of all time. When understanding trilogies, and their significance, a person has to under stand how hard it is to make a film, let alone three films. These trilogies will span across time, and genres and are in no specific order. I will go into the three movies that make up the trilogy, what genre they are in, and why they are important.I will link more about the films

1) The Dark Knight Trilogy- Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The dark Knight Rises
Genre: Superhero, Crime, Action
If you read my blog you can understand why I love these films. First off the movies are directed by Christopher Nolan, and have Christian Bale staring in them. These movies take a griddier look at how a super hero film can be shown.

2) The Austin Powers Trilogy- Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Austin Powers in Goldmember
Genre: Comedy, Spy, Action
If you are looking into watching a comedy trilogy I would suggest starting here. Mike Myers plays a good chunk of the characters played across all three films, and some you will not recognize.

3) The original X-men Trilogy-X-Men, X-Men 2, X-Men: The Last Stand
Genre: Superhero, Action, Adventure
Yet another super hero trilogy, but these films also show how a good super hero movie can be made. They all have grit, and yet they all have a humor about them. The third movie in the trilogy is not as highly rated, but the films together tell a great story.

4) The Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy- Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
Genre: Adventure, Action
These Disney films show how a good pirate movie should be made, With the all star cast of Johnny Depp, Orlando Blume, and Keira Knightley. All three movies are worth the watch, and you will have a fun time with them all.

Genre: Horror
If you are looking to watch a series of frightening films, that also have some comedic aspects to lighten the movie up at times then this series is for you. The movies are extremely gory, and I would recommend only adults watching these films. Across the series they get more light hearted as they go, but be ready for a scare.

Genre: Sci-fi, Fantasy
What would this list be without Star Wars on it. Arguably the best trilogy ever made. I would recommend watching all three in a row if possible. The best representation of a space opera out there.

A look into the past

Since I am further into my blogging I would like to take a look back into some of my earlier blogs.

My first blog was about the movie the six sense. I take a look at different visual cues throughout the movie that help the movie watcher better understand the movie. A couple things that I go through are the color red, and its meaning in the movie, Visual temperature changes, and Bruce Willis's conversations with people. If you are interested in finding out more click the link below.
http://movieknowhow.blogspot.com/2017/02/the-sixth-sense.html

The next blog I wrote about was Jaws. I go into an explanation of what a score is in a film compared to music. Then I took a look at Jaws score, and how it affected scenes within the movie. I give a visual description of how all the parts work together with the score and the visuals to help people understand why this aspect of the movie makes people feel suspense and terror. If you would like to see more about score and how it works within Jaws click the link below.

To help movie goers get a more in depth view about film making I made a list of ten different Directors. This list is in no particular order, but it shows ten famous directors within the industry and the different film techniques they use. I also give out three or four different film recommendations per director to give an interested person things to watch by said director. If you are interested in taking a look into the directors and the film recommendations click the link below.

Netflix

Netflix is a web streaming service that allows people to watch movies, and television shows for one flat rate. This service works for people on a budget trying to watch movies. The basic price per month is $7.99, and at the most for the premium service costs $11.99. This is a huge price cut compared to cable which can cost upwards of $100 or more.

This service is for a person who genuinely like movies, or television shows. They have the capability to binge watch what ever is on the service. The web service releases television shows and movies every month. The possibilities are endless for what one person can watch. Most films are theatrically released and are available on dvd, but they can be seen for one flat rate on Netflix. The services is now producing and releasing their own content.

A couple down sides to the service is the selection is vast, but it is limited. That is why they offer new movies, and tv every month. They also lose those films and tv after a period of time. They also only have content that is released elsewhere, besides their self made content, that can be purchased without the service. The big turn down for opting out of cable for this is for sports fans. They would not be able to watch their favorite sports teams play.

Overall the product is made for people whos man objective is watching movies, and tv series. Even through the content is limited, I guarantee you will not be able to finish the library of things to watch before more content comes out

My review Star Wars Episode V

Star Wars Empire Strikes Back is considered by many the best star wars film in the franchise. This is for many reasons. One major reason is the dark tone throughout the film. There are many scenes that have dark actions happen, or dark visuals. The first dark visuals are shown when Luke first gets captured by the snow monster. There are visuals of the monster eating another animal, and Luke being hung upside down to show that he is going to be eaten next. Following this Luke kills the monster by injuring it, and then going into the snow to possibly freeze to death. After he is laying there Hon Solo saves him, but has to put him in an animal to keep him warm. This is within the first few minutes. Following this Luke goes to another planet and has to find Yoda. When he land on this planet his ship gets stuck in muck. The planet has very clear dark tones to show that this trip may lead to nothing and Luke may be stranded on the planet. While on the planet he confronts what he thinks is Darth Vader in a cave and ends up hurting him to only see his face in the defeated thing in the cave. Following this he leaves the planet because he sees visions of his friends being trapped. This is True and Hon Solo who saved him in the beginning of the film was frozen in carbon. While Luke tries to save Hon he has to confront Vader who sprung a trap on him. While Luke is facing him he learns that Vader is his father, and in the process losses a hand. Then Luke falls nearly to his death, but is saved by his friends. The film ends with many questions about what is going to happen in the future.

This film to me is great, but the predecessor a new hope was better in my opinion. In a new hope Luke starts his journey not knowing what is going on, and ends up a hero in the end. While Empire Strikes back does a great job story telling, it leaves to many questions unanswered. The third film in the trilogy wraps everything up. Yet, the whole film tries to wrap up everything, and makes the film unable to stand alone. A new hope leaves doors open for another film, it does a great job alowing the film to stand alone. Over all empire strikes back is an amazing film in its self. I would give the film four and a half stars out of five.

My website

Today I am going to look into my website and how it is being developed. My main point I am trying to get across to the person who reads my blog is a more in depth look into film making.

I have looked into some movies such as Jaws and the Sixth Sense. The two ideas I was trying to get across in these films were about score in a film, and how color can affect themes. These ideas are essential to film making. Most movies, even ones that are not considered great, have a combination of both within the film.

This look at the films is meant to be unbiased. I do like both of these films, but each example is a great use of that specific part of film making. I may use movies in the future that I do not like as much, but i may use them as an example because they can highlight a specific part of the film that was done well.

Readers may not enjoy the idea of me not giving feedback on the films, but being unbiased will help me better explain aspects of film making through examples. The main idea for this is not for a reader to watch a movie because I like it or not, rather they watch a film that I discuss and have a better understanding of how, and why the film works. Then based off those ideas they can make a judgment for them selves. They can use these ideas as a resource rather than a judgment tool.

sound design

Sound design is taking audio elements and changing them to what fits your setting in your film. This can be anything from dialogue, Foley sounds (post production audio added in to mimic an action on screen, music, score, to any other sound found in the film.

First, dialogue for most movies is the main driving component of the film. Some things that a person needs to take a look at when making a film is if the character on screen can be understood clearly. Any sort of background noise can defeat what the actor, or actress is trying to get across. The person speaking can be saying something quietly to show they do not want another person to hear what they are saying, or a person can be yelling to show how angry they are. There are many in between scales of speech that can show different actions, or ideas without actually having to say them. One such example is in the movie Network. The main protagonist is fed up with the news network and decides to talk about what is happening on the news live. You can hear his voice as hes is talking go from frustrated to pure anger.

Another part of sound editing is the noises that are going around the characters. The blog Things I know about the movies does a great example of how this is done. The author talks about gravity in the post. The movie is set in space where noise can not be herd. A Quote from the blog describes how this affects the film. "In space, one wouldn’t exactly hear something approaching quickly, and there were a number of times where I cringed at the realization that a character had no idea of what was coming at them hot and heavy." This quote shows how lack of sound around a charter works as well. The idea of hearing nothing shows the character can hear nothing. Then a shot can be shown from behind the character the lets the audience know that something bad is coming and the character does not know about it.

Analyzing Dustin off the Reels

A look into another film blog brought me across Dustin Off The Reels. His area of blogging goes more into depth of looking at specific films and reviewing them, as where my blog goes more into what goes into making a film.

Dustin off the Reels blog takes a movie and dissects it. The first part of the blogs give an introduction to the film. Some times it is about a personal experience with the films, as other times it will give a background of sorts. It can discuss the director, and how the film on a surface level compares to the other films.

The next part of the discussion gives an overview of what happens in the movie. It will give names of actors with the name they go by in the film, then a basic preview of what happened in the movie. This gives the reader a chance to see what the author has to say without seeing the film.

The next part goes into a more in depth discussion of how the film was made, and what the author thought about the the film.

The blog does a good job of recounting what the film is, and tries to give a person interested in the film an idea if they should see the film or not. This is a film review page which is a little different from what my posts are about. The blogs can seem biased based off of what the author thinks about the films. The posts also could go deeper into the film making without giving any spoilers. But, on the other hand it is very informative about the film, and the author seems like they know about film making. The highest rated posts seem to be big movies that people have all ready seen, so they might be more inclined to see what other people think about the movie being reviewed compared to reading a post to see if they would like to see the movie

The overall layout of the movie reviews seem to be well done, and I personally agreed with many of the remarks said.

Film Babbles Blog about Star Wars

The Film Babble Blog had a post called It’ll Always Be STAR WARS, Not A NEW HOPE To Me, where the blog describes the crawl text of Star Wars through the different films, and how the films have been edited through the years.

The main overarching idea in the post talks about how when the original Star Wars film was released it was just called Star Wars. Now when a consumer goes to watch the movie it is called Star Wars Episode IV: a New Hope. This has changed because the film was reedited since release to vhs, dvd, and blue-ray. The original way the film was release in theaters is not available to an every day consumer. A person who have to illegally download the film online to see its original version. The author also brings up the original film won the best film editing oscar. This seems like the original film should be released unedited along with the reedit, and allow people to decide which version is better.

This article hits home because star wars is one of my favorite films of all time. I would like to legal be able to purchase and see how the film was originally seen in theaters. Film Babble did a great job of explaining why this should happen in the future.

The blog also discusses how the new Star Wars film Rouge One does not have the screen crawl in it. This sets up other movies in the same universe, made by other people, to allow them to make films on how they envision it with or without the text.

If you would like to read his full blog about the idea you can click the link below.

Jaws

Jaws is a fantastic movie to look more in depth into how a score affects a movie. A score is defined as music made for the movie specifically. This music made to help define the movie, and not music made outside of the movie for other purposes.

I would like to look at jaws because most people have either seen the movie or have at least herd the movie score one place or another. The music is very deep and starts off slowly. Then as the music progresses it gets faster and faster to build up tension.

There is a scene within the movie where a woman is swimming by her self in the water, and is eventually attacked by the shark. If you were to take this scene and play no music over it, it would still be terrifying because of the way shark attacks. Yet, it would be a girl floating around for a while by her self with some weird camera angles. Then the shark comes across and attacks.

When you add the music it adds the affect of suspense and unknowing to the scene. You see the girl swimming. Then you hear the first few notes of the of the score. They are deep and give a feeling of uneasiness. Then the camera flips underneath her in the water and the music starts to pick up. This show or hints at the idea that what ever is make the scene uneasy is going to come from under the water. Then the music builds as strong as it can go and she is finally attacked.

This shows how a score can set a scene, or even show a mood that a directer wants you to feel. A movie score is an essential piece of film making that can greatly enhance how the film is shown.

The Sixth Sense

The movie The Sixth Sense, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, is created to have a twist ending. This movie, like most other films directed by M. Night, tries to show you through the film whats going to happen before it is actually seen by you.

Most people have seen this movie, or herd about the ending where Bruce Willis is actually dead the entire movie. But, when people watched it the first time they were genuinely shocked about how it turns out. Yet, if you watched closely enough during the film, a person could figure out the ending. The director left visual clues to help people paying attention to have a better understanding of what is trying to be shown in the scene.

If you go back and re-watch the film there are a few things you might notice:

  • The color red appearing in the film very regularly
  • A visual sudden change in temperature
  • Bruce Willis's normal looking conversations with people
The first thing you will notice on re-watching the film is the color red. Anytime a dead person interacts with the normal world there is red somewhere in the scene. This is a visual clue given to help people who are looking closely to tell what is happening.

The next thing you will notice is the temperature changing suddenly in the movie. Any time a ghost is agitated and interacting with a human the temperature gets visually cold. Their are scenes within the movie where the main character Cole played by Haley Joel Osment comes in contact with an upset ghost and you can see his breath.

The final visual clue that is left is Bruce Willis's interactions with people. This is reviled in the film at the end. Every interaction with another person besides the main character is not actually happening. All the conversations are either one sided, or seem like he is fitting in on the conversation, but nobody can actually hear him

Visual clues a part of story telling used by Directors to help better tell the story.

About Movie Connoisseur

Hello! My name is Movie Connoisseur. Watching movies has been something I have been doing my entire life. I have watched every genre of movie out there, as well as watched a film from almost every decade. When I was a child I would watch several movies a week. Now with my real world scheduled I have toned down on the movie watching.

Even though I watch less movies now I have broadened my movie watching experience. I currently research critically acclaimed and historically significant movies to watch. This has led me to dig deeper into what goes into making a movie, and everything behind the film. This movie knowledge has led me to even re-watch films I loved growing up and gave me a better appreciation for them.

A couple movie I have watched recently that I have looked deeper into:

  • North by Northwest
  • A Fist Full of Dollars
  • Taxi Driver
  • Eternal sunshine for the spotless mind

There are many things that the average movie goer can miss. Some examples are different styles of cinematography that help tell a story, or give a different perspective. Another example is color throughout movies that go unnoticed that help set up a scene or help set up a tone a director is trying to show.

My goal is to help the average person get a better understanding of what goes into making a movie, and help them get a better appreciation of film.

As the famous film critic once said "it's not what a movie is about, it's how it is about". When a film is looked at deeper than just the surface people will gain a greater appreciation of what film can be to them.
