How to pick out a movie

I am going to go through the best way to pick out a movie for a person who does not know what to watch.

There are too many options of movies to watch out there, and it is a hard time for an average person to find what they want to watch. Movies have spanned decades, with different topics, ideas, themes, and all sorts of other varieties. How can a person to begin to know where to look? I will go through the different venues of how to get an idea. From there I will go more in depth on where to look to help you make a decision.

Genre
The first thing that comes to mind when picking out a movie is what a person is looking to get out of a movie. A movie Genre is the description of what type of movie it is. There are a ton of genres and even more sub genres.

The first broad thing a person would want to look at is they would like to watch something fictional or non-fictional. The fictional characterization has a much broader variety of things to pick from where non-fictional does not. For non-fiction people are most likely going to choose documentaries. There are films based on peoples lives, but for the most part they are dramatized so i would categorize this under fiction. If you are looking for non-fiction a good documentary will be right up your ally. There are documentaries about literally everything you can think of and for the most part you will end up learning something from it.

If you are looking for fiction the next thing your going to want to look into is if you want to watch animation or non animation. Animation is a film that doesnt use real people to tell a story. They could use computer generation, claymation, and many other types ways to tell a story. There are movies that use both like space-jam, but these movies would fall under the animation category. The reason I bring this up is because animation is so broad now
a days that you can watch any genre and they will have an animation type movie for that.

Next you will have to pick from the bigger end genres. The major genres that come to mind are
horror, western, romance, action, adventure, war, drama, historical, gangster, historical period piece, martial arts, sci-fi, disaster, fantasy, mystery, comedy, romantic comedy, coming of age, family film, indie film, mockumentary, thriller, and musical. That seems like a lot of different types. Some could be sub categories of other genres, but most have enough films to stand along. I will go through these to help you choose the best option

Horror is a genre used to get a negative emotion out of people through scaring them. This genre may have the most different types of sub-genres within it. If you enjoy this then you will have a lot to pick from.

Western is a genre that takes place in older times normally set around times when people lived on farms, and had towns near by. It is civilized society that is under rule by guns. I would say that western is a sub-genre of action, but there are comedy westerns as well.

Romance is a genre based around characters loving each other and going through trials to see how far love will go.

Action is a genre where the protagonist and antagonist go through trials that resort in different kinds of violence to solve their issue

Adventure is a genre where a character goes through new experiences which can be similar to action.

War is a genre focused around the telling of historical battles, or dramatized versions of them.

Drama shows real life characters that deal with conflict that show them at their best and their worst.

Historical movies ushally show a dramatization of events that happened in the past.

Gangster films revolve around characters being involved in a gang, and the events that happen because of their involvement.

Martial arts is a sub-genre of action and adventure that shows the protagonist knowing or learning a form of martial arts and using those abilities to go through trials.

Sci-fi is a genre that uses idea that are not accepted by science that differ from our reality. Things like aliens, space travel, or even time travel can fall under this category.

Fantasy is a genre close to sci-fi, but has to do more with mystic ideas such as magic, mythology, or supernatural events.

Comedy is another genre that has many sub-genres. It is meant for the viewer to laugh at the film through different means.

Mockumentary  is a new genre that is suppose to look like a documentary, but is not actually one.

Musical is a type of film that uses music to incorporate different ways of telling a story.

Actor or Actress
If the genre thing does not work for you maybe picking out an actor or actress that fits your needs may work. In our current times actors and actresses do not stick to the same genre of film. They can be in a comedy one day, then the next be in a drama. For some people they like the skills of how they portray different characters. This allows people to experience different genres while liking how an individual works.

Director.
One way a person decides what to watch is by who is directing it. Every director now a days has a style or type of way they like to present a film. Wes Anderson is a good example because of the very unique way of story telling. Other directors like Micheal Bay who make big production films may be more your style. Plus their are so many good options, that if you like a director they usually have a bunch of films in their repertoire that you can have many things to pick from

Once you have decided on something to use for your base, the internet can help guide you towards what you would like to watch. One good resource is IMDB. It is a website that you can plug in any choice you have made and it will give you options on the choice.
