sound design

Sound design is taking audio elements and changing them to what fits your setting in your film. This can be anything from dialogue, Foley sounds (post production audio added in to mimic an action on screen, music, score, to any other sound found in the film.

First, dialogue for most movies is the main driving component of the film. Some things that a person needs to take a look at when making a film is if the character on screen can be understood clearly. Any sort of background noise can defeat what the actor, or actress is trying to get across. The person speaking can be saying something quietly to show they do not want another person to hear what they are saying, or a person can be yelling to show how angry they are. There are many in between scales of speech that can show different actions, or ideas without actually having to say them. One such example is in the movie Network. The main protagonist is fed up with the news network and decides to talk about what is happening on the news live. You can hear his voice as hes is talking go from frustrated to pure anger.

Another part of sound editing is the noises that are going around the characters. The blog Things I know about the movies does a great example of how this is done. The author talks about gravity in the post. The movie is set in space where noise can not be herd. A Quote from the blog describes how this affects the film. "In space, one wouldn’t exactly hear something approaching quickly, and there were a number of times where I cringed at the realization that a character had no idea of what was coming at them hot and heavy." This quote shows how lack of sound around a charter works as well. The idea of hearing nothing shows the character can hear nothing. Then a shot can be shown from behind the character the lets the audience know that something bad is coming and the character does not know about it.
